- soundtoys EchoBoy : The Ultimate Echo Machine – Textural Analog and Tape Delay Demo
Here’s a little demo of the soundtoys EchoBoy to showcase how it does vintage delays really nicely! Almost all of the delay plugins I’ve encountered REALLY lacked character, but this thing is definitely something else ..
I showcased the delays in this order using one of the Spectrasonics Omnisphere Rhodes models:
- Binsonette
- Memory Man
- Space Echo
- Ambient
As you can hear, I’m using the same loop and letting the delay ring out so you can hear the character in the decay and how it smears really nicely.

PreviousNextPreviousNext
We’ve asked our Plugin Boutique users to list their best delay plugins in our annual survey. Here’s the best delay plugins for 2012 as listed by our respondents! You can view video for each plugin in the player below and find out more about our best filter plugins and where you can buy them in the text descriptions.
1. Ableton Delay
Ableton includes a suite of various delays.
The Filter Delay provides three independent delay lines, each preceded by linked low-pass and highpass lters. This allows applying delay to only certain input signal frequencies, as determined by the lter settings. The feedback from each of the three delays is also routed back through the lters.
The Grain Delay effect slices the input signal into tiny particles (called grains) that are then individually delayed and can also have different pitches compared to the original signal source.
The Ping Pong Delay effect uses a single tapped delay line to create a delay that jumps from the left to the right output. The delay is preceded by a lowpass and highpass lter that can be controlled with an X-Y controller.

2. FabFilter Timeless 2
Our users voted Fab Filter Timeless 2 second in our list of best delay plugins. FabFilter Timeless 2 is not only a perfectly modelled classic tape delay. Its unique high-quality filters and many creative options turn it into the ultimate sound-mangling machine! Create echo, chorus, flanger, phaser, scratch effects and much more.

3. SoundToys EchoBoy
Third on the list is SoundToys Echo Boy, here is what SoundToys have to say about Echo Boy. ”When we designed EchoBoy, we were looking for an echo that was warmer than existing delay plug-ins, yet not as dark as guitar pedal echos. EchoBoy is now one of those ‘must-have’ plug-ins for Pro Tools, and has become a permanent fixture on the aux faders of thousands of top mixers and engineers.”

4. Rob Papen RP Delay
In at four Rob Papen RP Delay. The perfect accompaniment to RP-Verb, this latest effects plug-in from Rob Papen includes numerous new features that will transform the way you mix your music – whether it be electro dance vocals or acoustic orchestral instruments.

5. Fruity Loops Delay
Number Five comes from Image Line’s Fruity Loops. Fruity Delay is a delay line plugin, with inverted stereo / ping pong modes & a lowpass filter, optimized for automation (input and feedback values are ramped). Fruity delay is closely related to the Fruity Delay 2 plugin. Fruity Delay Bank is the most sophisticated delay plugin in the FL Studio effects kit.

6. Logic Tape Delay
Tape Delay simulates the warm sound of vintage tape echo machines, with the convenience of easy delay time synchronization to your project tempo. The effect is equipped with a highpass and lowpassfilter in the feedback loop, simplifying the creation of authentic dub echo effects. Tape Delay also includes an LFO for delay time modulation, which can be used to produce pleasant or unusual chorus effects, even on long delays.

7. Variety Of Sound Nasty DLA
At 7, The NastyDLA is a classic chorus echo device with tape-delay simulation. The device enables classic chorus and echo effects along with authentic signal path coloration and tape-delay style feedback and saturation. Did we mention.. its is FREE!

8. Waves H-Delay
From real old school PCM42-style effects like filtering, flanging, and phasing, to slap-back echo, ping-pong delay, and tempo-sync with modulation, H-Delay delivers the goods, controlled by a super intuitive interface that lets you get right down to business.

9. Ohm Force Ohmboyz
In at Number 9..Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s just the highly acclaimed OhmBoyz, a delay unit that starts with 4 pre-delays, each offering independent sync, level and pan controls.

10. Logic Delay Designer
Delay Designer is a multitap delay. Unlike traditional delay units that offer only one or two delays (or taps), that may or may not be fed back into the circuit, Delay Designer provides up to 26 individual taps. These taps are all fed from the source signal and can be freely edited to create delay effects that have never been heard before.
