Stack Multiple MIDI Tracks In Logic Pro

Stack Multiple MIDI Tracks In Logic Pro

Learn how to stack multiple MIDI tracks in Logic Pro at once from the same MIDI source in this lesson from Logic Cafe.

This tutorial explores a simple method for creating multi-timbre synth textures and layers using separate software instruments as the sound source. The example uses three instruments from Logic Pro, but you can select as many instruments from the Logic Pro and Audio unit library as your computer can handle. This will also work for external MIDI tracks from hardware synthesizers.

Step 1

In the arrange page load the instruments you wish to use to create your synth texture. In this example Steinway piano, silky String Section and Another world have been pre-loaded. You can use whatever software instruments are available to you.

Step 2
In the arrange page click the record enabled button on to make sure it is highlighted in red on each of the MIDI tracks that you wish to record as part of your texture.

With one of the record enabled tracks selected, play your MIDI controller. You should hear all of the sounds selected simultaneously.

Step 3
To record your synth texture, click on record in the transport bar and play.

You will see that Logic Pro records the MIDI data on the main track and creates aliases on the other MIDI tracks. In order to edit the MIDI data you must edit on the track containing the original recording.
