Slave Maschine to Logic – Control Maschine via the MIDI Clock in Logic Pro

Slave Maschine to Logic – Control Maschine via the MIDI Clock in Logic Pro

Learn to slave Maschine to Logic Pro and get full use out of Maschine’s ability to host third party plug-ins.

This tutorial explores an alternative system of running Native Instruments Maschine as a MIDI slave to Logic Pro as opposed to opening Maschine as an Audio Unit plug-in.

Setting Maschine and Logic Pro up together to work in this way has both advantages and disadvantages depending on your own workflow preferences and the setup you use. This is more apparent to users who like to take full advantage of Maschine’s ability to host third party plug-ins, yet find that when trying to load plug-in heavy Maschine sessions when used as an Audio Unit in Logic Pro, they are greeted with a “not enough memory” message. This can happen even when the computer used has 16GB of RAM or more which should easily handle the workload.

There are two main reasons that a user may encounter this message:

  • The user actually does not have enough memory
  • Logic Pro is running in 32bit mode, which allocates a maxinmum of 4GB RAM, restricting the RAM usage of Maschine as an Audio Unit

One solution is to upgrade the system to 64bit, in which Logic Pro can potentially allocate an infinite amount of RAM.

The other solution is to run Maschine as a MIDI clock slave to Logic Pro, enabling the two to run together as separate devices. Here is how to do it:

Step 1: Setting up Logic Pro

Click on Logic Pro in the top menu bar and select Preferences>MIDI from the drop down menu
