Rewire MIDI from Ableton to Logic Pro – MIDI from Ableton to Logic

Hi Producers,

Yesterday I showed you how to write melodies with ease in Ableton Live, we had some comments of how to do this in Logic, Logic does not have the fold feature but there is away around this if you also have Ableton. You can rewire midi from Ableton to use with virtual instruments within Logic meaning you can still use  the fold feature in Ableton to write melodies with ease, here’s how it is done.

Firstly open up the Audio and Midi preferences and add a new port, name this new port as ‘To Logic’.

Now open up Ableton and open up the preferences and select the midi sync tab, turn off all the midi inputs and turn off the IAC Driver Bus 1. Leave the ‘To Logic’ IAC Driver outputs on but also turn off the outputs of the USB Midi interface.

Now go back to Live and create a Midi track and select IAC Driver (To Logic) in the midi to drop down box.

Now launch Logic and create a midi track. Click file and open project settings and select recording. Click both boxes in the midi section so they are checked and active.

Open up the environment and click the drop down menu at the top left of the environment and select click and ports. This will then open up a physical input box.

Remove the cable from the input voice from the physical layout box and create a new cable from the physical layout box to the keyboard.

Close the environment and go back to the arrangement view, click on the midi track and select midi 1. Now place a virtual instrument of your choice on that channel.

Now go back to Ableton and draw some notes in the midi channel and press play, this will now play the notes from Ableton to the instrument in Logic.

You can do this for up to 16 channels by selecting the corresponding midi to from Ableton to the midi channel in Logic.

Please also see the video below, which takes you through the process.

Enjoy making melodies with ease in Logic !

  1. Hola! I’ve been following your blog for a while now and finally got the bravery to go ahead and give you a shout out from Porter Tx! Just wanted to tell you keep up the fantastic work!

  2. That’s pretty cool but I do have a question. What would be the advantage to doing something like this? (rewiring a host to a host)

Hi – as an example, you might really like to use the Maelstrom synth in Reason, or a particular effects rack you’ve created in Ableton – but your DAW of preference in general is Logic. Rewiring either of these to Logic gives you the best of both worlds, allowing you to use these non-Logic features and stream the audio to your Logic session.

Is there a way to sync both?

I mean, the process works, but they will not play in time with each other. If i have a beat playing in logic. then i have to start the Midi section on LIVE which will cause that is not in syn with the beat.

Is there a way to do it?

    • loopmasters says:

You need to make sure that you follow the right sequence so that Ableton automatically slaves to Logic. You should open Logic first and then open Ableton – Ableton will then open in Re-Wire mode and automatically sync to Logic. If you are still having trouble with this, there may be a problem with your Re-Wire.
